Pre-pointe is for ballet dancers to determine whether they can commence en pointe. Due to the repetitive nature and loading required through a dancer’s lower limb with pointe, often poor biomechanics or lower limb strength can result in sustaining injuries for dancers. Regarding when to consider a pre-pointe assessment, this is a discussion between the dancer and her teacher, where both wanting to progress the individuals dance skills.
A Pre-pointe assessment allows for a dancer to go through a detailed history regarding their previous dance history, existing and previous musculoskeletal injuries, as well as relevant information required with a Physiotherapist.
During the assessment, the dancer will go through a lower limb functional assessment. This assessment includes range of movement, strength and functional capacity of the core, hip, knee, ankle, foot and supporting muscles.
It is recommended for the dancer to wear form fitting clothes, like what you would wear to class. This allows for the Physiotherapist to review your posture and alignment.
From the assessment, the Physiotherapist will provide information to the dancer and teacher. If required strengthening coach and appropriate technical training could be recommended. A Physiotherapist will often complete an initial assessment, and a follow-up regarding outcomes of the pre-pointe assessment results.
