What Conditions Can Physiotherapy Treat?

One of the many frustrations that clients have when being injured is not knowing where to start.

Should I see a GP first? Do I need a scan? Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist? Can a physiotherapist help?

These are extremely valid concerns. However, addressing them now prevents delays and helps you get back to your sport and your favourite activities much faster.

When Can a Physio Help?

Physiotherapists have a unique skill set that allows them to assess, diagnose, and treat many different conditions. Usually, the earlier you can see a physio, the better!

We would always recommend seeing a physiotherapist within the first 2 to 3 days of an injury to ensure your progress back to 100% can start early.

Do I Need a Referral to See a Physiotherapist?

No! You do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist.

Do I Need a Scan Before Seeing a Physiotherapist?

No! Physios are able to diagnose injuries based on the way the injury occurred, and the assessment completed in the session.

Whilst scans can be useful, they can often show many normal, age-related changes. If you do have a scan, your physio can help interpret those results to provide clarity.

Physiotherapists are also able to refer for scans if necessary and will let your GP know as needed.

What Conditions Can Physios Help With?

Generally, your physio will be able to set you on the road to recovery for any of the following conditions:

  • Acute injuries, aches, and pain
  • Long term pains, such as persistent pain or osteoarthritis
  • Muscle pulls or strains
  • Ligament sprains
  • Bone-related injuries
  • Joint stiffness
  • Work- or transport-related injuries
  • Difficult achieving sports or activity performances
  • Post-surgical recovery

Physiotherapists can also help with other conditions, such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Feeling off balance on unsteady on your feet
  • Weakness through the muscles
  • Neurological conditions and rehabilitation
  • TMJ or jaw-related issues
  • Issues with incontinence

Some of these conditions may require further training from the physiotherapist. If they do not feel they are the most appropriate person to help, they will refer you to the right people.

I am Not Sure If My Injuries are in This List, What Do I Do?

If you are unsure whether a physio is right for you or your injury, give your physiotherapist a call or send them an email!

Your physio will be able to determine whether the injury is suitable for physio management. It is important to feel confident that the person you will be seeing is the right person for you.

So, When Should I See a Physiotherapist?

Book in with a physiotherapist if you have had a recent injury, a longer-term injury that isn’t getting better, feeling weak or stiff through your body, or feeling like you can’t achieve your best in your sporting aspirations or daily life. And remember, if you are not sure, then just ask!
